computer program that is being used by Grade 7-8 educators in our Division.
This page attempts to help both the Grade 7-8 Mayet clerks and
educators by providing both answers and resources.

How
can I transfer from the Jr. High Report Card software back to Mayet? |
1 |
To assist you with this transfer process, a one-page handout has been
prepared. One may choose to click on either link below to acquire this
resource in either Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF format. One must have Adobe
Acrobat Reader installed to be able to view the PDF formatted file. -

Transfer Process (PDF format) Note: As a minimum, this procedure
should always be accomplished at the end of each term and at the end of the
school year. However, if marks have been entered into the Jr. High Report Card
software, it is strongly recommended that this procedure be followed prior to
transferring student demographics and attendance from Mayet to the Jr. High
Report Card as described in the "hard copy" document(s) in the answer to
question #2 below. |

Administration/Managers or Mayet Clerks use the the Junior High Report Card
system? |

on a laser printer. . |

FAQ - Jr High (Grade 7 & 8)
Educators Area: |
1
|
Can I download this program off
this web site? |
1 |
No. Although the
Elementary Report Card software can be downloaded off the "Report Support"
web site, the Junior High version cannot. The Elementary version currently
is a "stand-alone" version but the Junior High version requires that the
user be connected to a network file server in each school. |

2
|
Does this mean I cannot work on my
reports at home? |
2 |
Yes. It is not
possible, at the present time, for Junior High users to connect to their
local school server from home to enter marks. So any percentages or
performance rubric values must be entered at school while connected to the
Junior High report card file server. |

3
|
How can I use my time wisely if I
cannot work at home? |
3 |
Experience from last
year's "pilot sites" indicated that if educators came prepared to a
workstation connected to the Report Card server, most educators could enter
all their student percentages and performance indicators in less than one
hour. Many educators used either a Word or Works word processor at home to
create a term overview which was saved to diskette. This file was brought to
school and the data copied and pasted into the appropriate fields in the
Junior High Report Card program.. |

|
Is there a manual or information to
help Grade 7 & 8 teachers using the Junior High Report Card system?

|
Are there any precautions that I
should take when saving a term overview or anecdotal comments to a floppy
diskette for transport from home to school? |
7 |
Regardless of the word
processing software one uses, it is VERY IMPORTANT to save any anecdotal or
term overview files to the computer's hard drive. Next copy the file(s) from
the hard drive to the floppy diskette. Users who save their word processing
files directly to the floppy often find they do not save reliably. Remember
the popular slogan ..."Save to the hard drive and copy to the floppy".

|
I have a different version of Word
at school than I have at home. How can I be sure that files created at home
and transferred to school on floppy will open properly? |
8 |
If your version number
of Word differs between home and school, it may be wise to save all report
card files as a "Rich Text Format" (RTF). To do so, when one clicks
"File>Save As ..." in Word and provides a descriptive "File name:" for the
document, one must press the "down arrow" to the right of the "Save as
type:" field. Choose "Rich Text Format (*.RTF) version so the file is saved
with an .RTF suffix or file type as opposed to the traditional Word .DOC
file type. RTF files tend to be more universal and can be transferred
between different version of the same word processing software as well as
many different word processors. |

|
Is there a less expensive
alternative for Microsoft Word for home use? |
9 |
"AbiWord" is a new
"open source" software product which provides a free alternative to
Microsoft Word. Visit the
December, 2003 issue of our Divisional "Bits
and Bytes" newsletter to learn where AbiWord can be acquired on the
Internet and how to install this powerful word processor. For those reading
this FAQ as "hard copy", check out the
