School Environment
 |
Wolseley School offers a small, intimate child-centered
learning environment that strives to be a safe, happy and dignified place for
both students and adults to grow and develop. |
 |
Teachers try to instill a spirit of cooperation and
collaboration in each student. Competition, in the main, has meaning only in
terms of a learner’s desire and courage to forge a better self through a
continuous pursuit of excellence. |
 |
Flexible groupings of children are used based on children’s
needs and the teacher’s purpose. |
 |
The services of support teachers and teacher assistants may
be utilized as extensions of the classroom teacher’s program. |
 |
Parents/guardians are viewed as resources and partners in the
education and guidance of children. Their active involvement and input are
encouraged and valued. |
Teaching and Learning
 |
Teachers differentiate their instruction taking into account
children’s abilities, interests, experiences, learning styles and needs. |
 |
Teachers may use themes and integrate subject areas as much
as possible. |
 |
Emphasis is on assisting children in linking their learning
to what they already know and what they need to know about the world in
authentic learning experiences. |
 |
A major focus is placed on making learning meaningful to
students and involving students in their own learning. Authentic learning is
stressed, i.e. learning by doing. |
 |
Process of learning is viewed as important as mastery of
content. Getting there is as important as having arrived. |
 |
Students are taught to reflect on their own learning. |
 |
Diverse teaching styles, methods and materials are used to
foster learning. |
 |
Homework is a meaningful extension of what is learned at
school. It can be a means of involving parents in their children’s learning at
home. |
Assessment, Evaluation and Reporting
 |
The teaching staff believe that assessment and evaluation are
continuous and on-going processes during the course of instruction. |
 |
A variety of materials and methods are used in the assessment
and evaluation of student performance. |
 |
Students take ownership and responsibility for their learning
by being involved in the assessment process , and by evaluating their progress. |
 |
Student-led conferences provide students with the opportunity
to reflect on what they are learning, what their strengths are, and what
learning goals they have set for themselves. |
