At Wolseley School, students are expected to...

bullet

respect the rights of students and staff to have a school environment which is free from fears, prejudices, distractions, and violence

bullet

demonstrate a cooperative attitude

bullet

maintain a calm, quiet atmosphere in the building

bullet

respect the property of the school and of the school community

bullet

attend school regularly and arrive on time

Wolseley School has zero tolerance for

violence, foul language, put downs, bullying,

disruptive behavior and disrespect!

There are times when students cho0se to act inappropriately at school. The staff will often view these incidents as learning opportunities to help develop responsibility, accountability, and self-discipline. We want students to:

bullet

recognize what they have done wrong

bullet

take responsibility and ownership of their own behavior

bullet

learn how to solve the problem they created

bullet

understand the impact of their behaviour on others

Teachers use a variety of methods and strategies in addressing disruptive, non-compliant, or oppositional behavior in their classrooms:

bullet

problem solving and conflict mediation discussions

bullet

quiet and reflective time in a location away from the other students.

bullet

contact with parents/guardians to keep them informed and to elicit their support

When the teacher believes that all reasonable avenues have been explored with

limited or no success, and the situation is too disruptive or dangerous to be allowed to continue, the student is asked to leave the classroom and the principal is informed of the seriousness of the student’s behaviour.

When students are asked to go the office, they will be required to:

bullet

discuss the situation with the adult to agree about what took place

bullet

write down what happened, what they did, why they did it, why what they did was a problem, what they could have done differently, and what they will do the next time.

bullet

share their writing with the adult who sent them

bullet

meet with the Principal to discuss what happened and what they have learned

bullet

share their writing with their parents/guardians

If the behavior continues, the following steps will be taken:

bullet

parents will be invited to the school to discuss the problem and possible solutions.

bullet

students may receive an in-school suspension and spend time in another classroom or in the office with specific assignments, or an out-of-school suspension for up to 5 days with specific assignments to do at home

bullet

support from the Child Guidance Clinic and/or other outside agencies may be considered.

bullet

a re-entry conference is scheduled with parents/guardians, child and staff.

bullet

the Superintendent's Department is informed of full day out of school suspensions.

bullet

expulsion from the school may be considered as a last resort.
