I Love To Read 2008

I Love to Read 2008

We have a lot of musical talent in our school, including our staff. We were very pleased that Mrs. Holloway, with Mr. Prosyk accompanying her on the guitar, sang to our school at our opening assembly. Mrs. Holloway composed the lyrics to her original song called “Worms of Wisdom.” At our closing assembly we enjoyed Mr. Daly’s rendition of “It’s so easy to read a book”. Thank-you to the three of you for bringing life to reading through your musical contributions. Mrs. Holloway’s song accompanies the slide show which can be viewed on our website.

I LOVE TO READ VIDEO

I Love to Read month was the focus in the library and around the school for February. We enjoyed a whole range of activities and events during the month. Some of the highlights were the book launch for Goose Girl on February 1 with special guests Rhian Brynjolson (illustrator of Goose Girl), Joe and Matrine McLellan (authors of Goose Girl)and special musical guest Ray Millar. The students from Grades 3, 4 and some of the 5’s were present to participate in this special event.

We invited a lot of guest readers including alumni, retired staff, Andrew Swan (MLA), Flora Marcelino (MLA), Peter Bjornson (Minister of Education) and other speakers from our school division. Every classroom had the opportunity to invite special guests into their classroom to share the joy of reading. We would like to extend our gratitude to these individuals who made a special effort to come to our school and read to our students.

Toward the end of the month we were privileged to welcome an Inuit storyteller Michael Kusugak. Michael uses his experiences growing up listening to stories told by his grandmother in sod huts, tents and igloos in his storytelling sessions. He weaves these experiences with what life was like living the nomadic, traditional life of Inuit along with the tremendous change that has occurred in the past 60 years. Michael Kusugak concluded his storytelling session by performing intricate string magic. The students marvelled at the variety of images he was able to conjure up with a loop of string.

The students (thanks to the willingness and participation of their families) raised money toward Project Love in order to buy school supplies for students in Tanzania. Project Love culminated efforts on February 29th in our school wide Read-a-Thon. Mr. Striny Reddy (founder of Project Love) paid a special visit to our Read-a-thon on Feb. 29, 2008. Mr. Ready’s experience and enthusiasm for the project was inspiring for all of us. A special place was reserved in the library on this day for non-stop reading. All classrooms had the opportunity to participate in this event.

If you were to visit our school during February and even into March, you would see an extremely long bookworm adorning the hallways of our school. Each segment of the worm represents a book read by one of our students. This worm continues to grow even though our offical reading month has now concluded. We have all the students in the school to thank for this, but special mention must be given to Room 228 and 225, who read hundreds of books with their families, teachers and book buddies.
