Schedule:   Wednesday, Thursday & Friday
                     January 30, 31 & February 1 (Days 3, 4 & 5)

Task: Without communicating with the captain (teacher) of the island which is diagonally opposite you, determine the coordinates where the two bridges are located on this remote island.

Steps:

Download or print out the city grid worksheet to help determine bridge coordinate locations.
You may not proceed until your captain (teacher) has shared with you the two routes between the bridges on EACH of the two adjacent islands.
Based on the island assigned and revealed to you in Activity 2, mark the locations of your two bridges (on your island) on the city grid worksheet. Identify the coordinates of your two bridges such as F4, G6, or F7 for example.
Assuming all bridges joining islands are straight and only travel in an EAST-WEST or NORTH-SOUTH direction, start with one pair of routes from one of your adjacent neighbourhood islands. Identify which island the routes are from and mark and identify the coordinates where at least the nearer bridge is located.
Beginning with the nearer bridge and the appropriate route, determine where the farthest bridge must be located on this adjacent island following the path supplied by the captain (teacher) of the island. Mark and determine the coordinate locations of the farther bridge.
Since you have used the one path which travels from the nearer to the farther bridge, use the second path from the farther bridge to see if you make the round-trip and return to the nearer bridge. If you do, mark the two bridge locations and coordinates on the city grid worksheet. If the trip does not bring you to the original bridge, compare your path with your class-mates to see if you can agree on the proper routes between the bridges.
Repeat the same problem-solving process with the two paths and the information from your other adjacent neighbouring island.
At this point you should be able to provide the coordinate locations of six bridges on your two adjacent islands and your own.
With these six bridges, identified on the city grid worksheet, you should be able to determine where the two remaining bridges must be on the diagonally opposite island. Mark and record the coordinates of the two remaining bridges.
As the conclusion of this activity, you must e-mail the pirate captain (teacher) of the diagonally opposite island. The e-mail address can be acquired by reviewing the Teams web page and copying the appropriate e-mail address(es).

As a class, prepare an e-mail message, using your best "pirate lingo" telling the pirate captain (teacher) the coordinates of the two bridges on her/his island. Ask for feedback as to whether you are right or wrong.
Check your e-mail at least twice a day during this activity so that it can be completed within the scheduled time.

It is very important to finish Activity 4 on schedule because Activity 5 will be a local island trial run and Activity 6 will be a collaborative race to see which team can find the hidden treasure buried in one of the coordinate locations somewhere on one of the four islands.
