Schedule:   Friday, Monday & Tuesday
                     January 25, 28 & 29 (Days 6, 1 & 2)

Task: Now begins the e-mail collaboration portion of the T.H.I.N.K.
project. Working with the completed map of your unique island
(which was completed and saved from Activity 2), your task is to
figure out the coordinates of the two bridges on the island that is
diagonally opposite your location. You cannot e-mail or contact the
pirate captain (teacher) or any crew members (students) on this
diagonally opposite island. You are permitted to e-mail only the two
captains (teachers) of the two islands that are adjacent or are
linked by bridges to your island. However, you cannot ask them the
coordinates of their bridges as the only information that they can share
with you is the two routes that will help you navigate between the
bridges on their respective islands. Likewise your neighbouring
pirate captains will want you to provide them with the two routes
to navigate between the two bridges on your island.

Later in Activity 4, when you have been e-mailed the two navigation
routes between the bridges on your two adjacent islands, (and you
have shared your  two routes between your bridges with your two
neighbouring islands) you should be able to problem solve to "see
the big picture". In fact, I believe that talented pirate crews, like you,
will be able to determine where all eight bridges are located in this city
and place them on a city grid. Once all eight bridges are positioned,
you may finally e-mail the pirate captain (teacher) at the diagonally
opposite island to yours and tell that person the coordinates
of the two bridges on his/her island. S/he, in turn, will want to e-mail
and tell you where their crew thinks your two bridges are located as well.

In order to help you through Activity #3, the following steps are provided:

Steps:

Download or print out the city grid to help with future problem solving.
Work as a class to determine two different routes between the
obstacles on your island using only the four directions of north,
west, east or south. Note one route must lead from the first bridge to the second bridge and the other route must provide a return trip from the second bridge to the first without travelling the exact same path. In addition, crews do not need to approach a bridge head-on but may
connect from the side as illustrated in the example below.
Write these routes using a series of codes in which the first letter
is one of the directions and the second number is the number of steps
in the indicated direction. For example, W2 means travel West 2 steps
or S3 means move South 3 steps.
Examine the example below and check to see that both of the routes
indicated are accurate.

E-mail your two adjacent neighbouring captains advising them
of the two routes between the bridges on your island. Make certain
you indicate in the e-mail message which island you are representing.
Check your e-mail daily (or more frequently if possible) to see if you
have received e-mail from your adjacent pirate captains and crews.
