The J. Ali Post-Secondary Scholarship (new scholarship 2008)

 Criteria: To be considered you must be a graduating grade twelve student who will be pursuing a post secondary education. ( university or college) There must be a financial need. The student should be actively involved in the community. This should be supported by some form of documentation or letter from an individual with knowledge of your volunteer experiences. You will need to produce a short letter of recommendation from a current/former teacher. Finally, you will need to produce a short essay of five hundred words how you will give back to the community and how this might continue after high school.

 Deadline:  All applications need to be in by Monday April 14th 2008.

The Donald Francis McNair Scholarship  (deadline April 30th, 2008)

Thank you very much to the family of the late Don McNair for establishing a scholarship in his memory.  The Don McNair Memorial Scholarship will award $4,000 to a Grade 12 graduating student.

Description:

This award will be available in June 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 to a student who plans to attend university immediately following graduation from St. John’s High School and demonstrates financial need.  The successful applicant must be enrolled in a full time undergraduate program.

Amount of Award:

In 2006, 2007 and 2008 the amount of the award will be $4000.00.  In 2009 the award will reflect the combined amount of interest and capital that remains.  Students are required to show proof of acceptance and full time registration at a university prior to receiving the cash award.

Criteria:

  1. Candidate must document their multi-disciplinary interest in learning and creativity.
  2. Candidate must attach an academic transcript (interim grades will be accepted) that demonstrates academic success and an overall minimum average of 80%.
  3. Candidate must list and describe participation in extra curricular activities.
  4. Candidate must list and explain leadership activities in the school and community.
  5. Candidate must submit a paper, no longer than 300 words, explaining their academic plan for post secondary studies and outline their academic goals for the future.
