Creating
Pattern Block Portraits
Objectives:
1. Students will use pattern blocks to reconstruct a portrait of their
principal.
2. Students will manipulate a pattern block bitmap file on the computer by copying
and pasting colored blocks to reconstruct the same portrait.
Materials: Pattern Blocks Bitmap File
Procedure:
Copy and save the pattern block image below into a read-only folder or drive.
Use pattern blocks in the classroom to create an image of the principal. In the
computer lab, ask students to open the pattern blocks file. Demonstrate how each
block can be copied and pasted onto the desktop. To do this, select (cut out) the
desired block. Click Edit...Copy. Click Edit...Paste. Place the block in
the desired location. Continue recreating blocks to create an image of the
principal.
Evaluation:
Were students successful in reconstructing a portrait of their principal? Were
students successful in copying and pasting desired number of pattern blocks?
