Again have a collection of Picasso visuals, this time use portraits.  For example...

portrai1.gif (20206 bytes)
Self Portrait (1907)

portrai2.gif (18433 bytes)
Girl Before the Mirror
(1932)

portrai3.gif (24283 bytes) portrai4.gif (13660 bytes)
Marie-Therese Sleeping

Talk about the colours used, lines and the fact that Picasso painted both the profile and frontal view at the ame time.  Talk about his unconventional way of painting eyes, noses, etc.  Hand out cartridge paper and hand mirrors then children will produce their own self portraits using oil pastels.  At this point they can make a 'normal' self portrait.  Limit this activity to about 30 - 45 minutes.  Collect all the work, without names on them, and, when the children are not around, tear up all the work making piles of noses, mouths, ears, eyes, etc.
