The Royal Winnipeg Ballet
The Royal Winnipeg Ballet is Canada's oldest ballet company. It was started in 1939 by Gweneth Lloyd and Betty Farrally. Before this building was built the ballet company had to meet in crowded rooms on top of a furniture store on Portage Avenue. This company is famous all over the world and has danced in 38 countries. On October 3, 1985 work started on their new building designed by Les Stechesen. He made the building look like the prairie with church windows and grain elevator shapes. It was opened on January 11, 1988. It has a performance studio, gift shop, ballet school, and is four storeys high.-Mary Jane Escarlan- |
