Portage Place takes three blocks on the north side of Portage Avenue between Vaughan Street and Carton Street. It was designed by RTKL architects from Baltimore. It was built by North Portage Development Corporation. Portage Place opened on September 17, 1987. The front of the building has terracotta panels saved from two old buildings that used to be there. Inside there is a 100 ft high skylight and a clock tower. The clock has parts that came from the clock that was on the old city hall. There are over 150 shops in the mall. There are even shops on the two skywalks over Portage Avenue. Underground there is parking for 1,900 cars. On the third floor there are three theatres, the Imax, and offices. The Imax theater has a screen five and a half storeys high and 71 feet wide. Attatched to Portage Place are apartments and condominiums. There is a new YMCA/YWCA that cost $9 million to build.- Ryan Reyes - |
