In 1932 the Manitoba Museum Association had a small museum in the Winnipeg Auditorium. In 1961 they began planning for a bigger one. Dr. Alfred E. Parr recommended a Museum of Man and Nature. They went to the Government of Manitoba with their idea. The Government decided to make the museum a centennial project. They decided to put the museum, the planetarium and a concert hall on Main Street. Then they began to build it. On July 15, 1970 Queen Elizabeth came to open it. At that time the Orientation and Grassland areas were ready. Later they added other areas for people to look at. One of the best places to go is the Nonsuch Gallery. There they have a copy of the ship that sailed from England to Canada looking for furs in 1668. The last place to be finished was the Touch the Universe in 1986. In 1990 over 165,000 people visited the museum and over 77,000 visited Touch the Universe. There is also a gift shop with good things to buy.
