Dalnavert

This house was built for Hugh John Macdonald. He was the son of Sir John A. Macdonald. Hugh John Macdonald was premier of Manitoba in 1900. Dalnavert house was his home until 1929 when he died. It then became a rooming house. It was going to be torn down in 1969 but was saved. It cost over $500,000.00 to renovate. It is a Queen Anne Revival-style home. There are guided tours of the house all year long. It has won five awards for historic restoration: Heritage Canada in 1974, American Association of State and Local History in 1975, Heritage Winnipeg in 1985, Designated a Provincial Historic Site in 1988, and Designated a National Historic Site in 1991.
