In 2004 Sargent Park School was the recipient of the International Reading Association Exemplary Reading Award.  A proposal to nominate Sargent Park was prepared by J. Kowall, our Reading Clinician.  Our thanks to her for allowing us to use portions of her report on this page.

The premise that "All teachers are teachers of reading" is not a new one, but this philosophy is truly embraced by the staff at Sargent Park School.  The implementation of proven 'best practices' in literacy instruction, as well as the  creation of novel programs to meet the specific needs of Sargent Park students, can be seen across all grade levels in our Nursery to Grade 9 school.

With the assistance and collaboration of both building administrators and specialist consultants, the teaching staff at Sargent Park have been able to pursue a wide variety of special projects to further advance their students' development of literacy skills.  The administrations 'hands on' approach has been evident from their direct participation in the school's literacy committee, to their provision of internal coverage for teachers to observe colleagues utilizing new instructional strategies.

Sargent Park School reflects what is best about teachers utilizing educational research and translating it into effective classroom practices.  Creative and exciting literacy instruction is a part of the daily life at Sargent Park.  It is very obvious that the students and the teachers are supported and thrive in the educational environment which has been created at Sargent Park School.
