Louis Riel is a hero because he fought for his people the Métis and their land. He became a father of Manitoba.

Riel's grave is in St. Boniface Winnipeg.

Early Life:
Louis Riel was born in 1844. Riel was born in St.Boniface, Manitoba.  He had a sister named Sara .

Later Life:
Riel married a woman named Marguerite.  He had two children Jean and Angelique and a son who died at birth. Riel later went to Montreal but he heard his Father died so he left school without graduating. He was training to be a lawyer.
Louis Riel led uprisings  against the Canadian government in 1869-1870 and 1885. He led protesting Métis (people of mixed white and Indian ancestry) who feared the land they had settled would be taken by new settlers. Louis was elected to the Canadian House of Commons  in 1873 and 1874, but his seat was denied. Louis suffered a mental breakdown in 1875. Then he moved to Montana.   He also became a teacher for awhile.  He became a United States citizen in 1883. In 1884, the Métis again feared they would lose their land to new settlers. Riel helped them form a provisional government in March 1885. Fighting broke out, and government troops defeated the Métis. Riel led the Red River Rebellion in 1886.
Riel died by being hung. This caused racial hatred between the French Canadians and the English Canadians that weakened Canadian unity.
