In the beginning of chapter 4 Annemarie’s mother and her sister Kirsti are out shopping while Annemarie and Ellen are on the on the floor playing with dolls. The dolls were cut out of Annemarie’s mother’s old magazines. The dolls were wearing old-fashioned clothes.  

While Annemarie and Ellen were on the floor playing with their dolls the door opened and Ellen came in stomping followed by her mother. Her mother was carrying a package.

  In the middle of chapter 4 Ellen’s mother is at the door. Annemarie’s mother answers the door. Ellen’s mother and Annemarie’s mother spoke for a very long time. Ellen’s mother tells Annemarie’s mother that Ellen will have to stay a few days at their house and she has bought a chicken for dinner. After the two mothers talked Annemarie’s mother returned with a worried face and told Annemarie and Kirsti that Ellen would be staying a few days with them.

  At the end of chapter 4 Annemarie’s father tells Annemarie and Ellen to change into their nightgowns. After the girls have changed Annemarie’s father talks to the two girls and tells them what to do if the Nazi soldiers come. He told them that if the Nazi soldiers come they should pretend to be sisters. After he talked to the two girls he kissed each of the girls on the head and told them “Once he had 3 daughters and tonight I am proud to have 3 daughters again.”
