In the beginning of chapter 17 church bells are ringing all over Copenhagen. The reason church bells are ringing is because the war is over. The Johansens dusted and polished the Rosen’s furniture. The Johansens hung a symbol of freedom in the Rosen’s window. That night the Johansens were on their balcony looking down at the happy people. After that the Johansens were crying because Peter Nelson was dead.
In the middle of chapter 17 the Johansens find out that Peter Nelson had
gotten caught. In a letter that he wrote Peter said he was not afraid and was proud
of what he had done for his country. Peter also asked if he could be
buried beside Lise. It said that he had loved them. After they read the letter
the Johansens were crying.
At the end of the story Annemarie had took Ellen`s necklace out of the spot where it was hidden and asked her dad if he could fix it. He said, “Yes”. Also Annemarie said once it was fixed she would wear it till Ellen came back. Annemarie asked her dad if she would ever see Ellen again and he said “Yes”. At the end of the chapter Annemarie went back to her room.
