At the beginning of chapter 12, Annemarie’s mom took the Rosen’s to the boat. Before they left, Ellen and Annemarie said goodbye to each other. Ellen said that she promised to come back one day and see Annemarie again. When Annemarie went inside to wait for her mom, she started to cry. Then she wiped her tears with the back of her hand.  She went to the rocking chair to try to relax and to trace the path in her mind. When she looked at the clock it was already 2:30. Her mom would be home at 3:30.

In the middle of chapter 12, Annemarie fell asleep.  When she woke up it was a little bit past 4:00. Annemarie’s mom was not there! Annermarie quickly went upstairs to look for her. First she looked in the room that Ellen and her slept in. Uncle Henrik’s was the next room beside it. The door was open.  His room was used, but empty!  Only his clothes were piled up in a chair and a pair of shoes. The next room that Kirsti and Mama shared was closed. Annemarie pushed it open. The little kitten in Kirsti’s arms suddenly twitched and opened his eyes wide. The kitten raised his head and jumped off the bed to the floor and walked to Annemarie. The kitten rubbed itself on Annemarie’s leg and purred.

          At the end of chapter 12, Annemarie ran to the window to look out at the moon and the clearing of the path. She wanted to see if her mother was on the path on her way home. Annemarie peered through the dimness still trying to see if her mother was on her way home. Telling herself “Mama, hurry home!.” After a minute or so, she started to see a shadow of something that had been laying on the ground. Annemarie squinted her eyes to see what it was. Then she saw that it was her mother laying on the ground. Was she hurt or something?
