               In the beginning of this chapter everybody was going to open the casket to see what’s inside. Then Annemarie started getting sleepy and a flash of light came in the window. Annemarie thought it was a nightmare because there was lots of noise. Everybody was scared. Mama told the Nazi soldiers that there had been a death.

At the middle of the chapter one of the officers pushed mama into the living room. He then looked at the casket for a long time. They think that Great-aunt Birte died. Then the officers said that they should open the casket but the doctor said “No”. She died of typhus and it could spread all over the place and everybody will be killed.

    At the end of this chapter Annemarie’s mother agreed with the doctor. Then the soldier slapped her on the face and said of course we won’t open the casket. He said to open the casket after they leave. Then they all began to say a psalm and they turned all the lights out. Then mama started to relax. Then Peter went to the casket to open the lid.
