In the beginning of chapter one, Annmarie asks Ellen if she wanted to race. Then
Annemarie started to plead so that her friend could race her. Ellen said
“Okay,” then Annemarie said, “Go!”
They both were off. The two girls were racing down the sidewalk and Annemarie was
first. Her silvery blonde hair was flying through the air. Ellen was second,
with her black pigtails bouncing on her shoulders. As they were racing, little
Kirsti was left behind. Annemarie and Ellen didn’t pay attention to her.
Annemarie swiftly ran past a lady with a shopping bag. Also, a lady that had a
carriage, had to move aside to make room for Annemarie. Then her laughter stopped
when she ran into a soldier, who told her to “Halte!” He asked her,” Why
are you running?”
The soldier asked if Annemarie was a good student. After talking to her
the soldier poked her bag and asked, “What was in here?” He asked,” What
is your name?” Annemarie answered,” Annemarie Johansen.” Then he asked,”
Is your friend a good student too?”
Annemarie replied “Better than me!” He
asked,” What is your friends name?” “Ellen.”
“Who is this? ”the second soldier asked. Annemarie looked beside her,
and Kirsti suddenly appeared. “My
little sister.”
The soldier stroked her hair and said,” “She is pretty, like
my own little girl.”
When
Annemarie came home. Kirsti was in the middle of the living room taking off her
sweatshirt. She was telling her mama that the soldier pulled her hair. Mrs.
Rosen asked, ”Where is Ellen?”
Annemarie said, “Ellen’s in your
apartment.” Then Mrs. Rosen pointed out that the girls should walk a different
way to school, because the soldiers will remember your faces. “You
girls walk a different way to school tomorrow. Promise
me, Annemarie.”
