Do you live in a
city or rural community?
We live in a small village of about 1000 people, some would say we are in
the middle of nowhere since there are no roads to get here.
Do you like living
in your community?
Yes we like Kangiqsualujjuaq because there is lots of snow and not too
many restrictions.
What kind of
building do you live in?
We live in houses but 30 years ago our grandparents lived in igloos.
What games do you
play in your community?
We love to play with home made boats and snow mobiles that we pull in the
water or on ice by a string.
How do you keep
your community safe? We have two police officers in our community.
The radio is used on regular a basis to discuss problems. The other day Sanak could not come to school because he was
sick. Since he does not have a telephone at home, the secretary called the radio
station and asked Sanack’s mother
to call the school from somebody else’s phone to inform the school of the
reason of his absence.
How do you have fun
in your community?
We love to play hockey in winter and we love camping in summer.
How long does it
take you to get to the nearest hospital?
It takes one hour by plane to go to Kuujjuaq hospital but if it is too
serious we must fly to Montreal. That
would take three hours.
What are some
safety rules at your school?
No fighting, be respectful
What types of
transportation do you have in your community?
In our community we usually use four wheelers or snowmobiles to get
around. Not many people have cars
or trucks unless they have a business.
Where do you get
your food?
My father goes hunting and fishing, my mother buys food at the Coop or at
the Northern.
How do you maintain
your roads?
We plow the snow but we do not put salt or sand.
Pedestrians should always wear ice grips on their boots.
It is very slippery, but we do not mind on our snowmobiles.
What weather do you
have in your community?
Very cold, lots of snow.
What do you carry
your school supplies in?
School bag
How do you get to
school everyday?
We walk to school, since only the kindergarten and the grade one
students are allowed to take the bus.
What kind of school
do you go to?
The only one in the community.
Were do you get
your clothes in your community?
We buy our clothes at the Coop and at the Northern.
Our mothers will sometimes still make our parkas.
What kind of
organized sports do you belong to?
The only thing we have is hockey.
Do you have 911 or
?
No 911, there are only two
police officers in the community, if something big happens, they send some
police from the south (MONTREAL).
Where do you get
your water from in your community?
A truck comes every day to bring water to the house.
How do you get to
the hospital if you are having a baby?
By airplane.
