Community Main Page
Our class made a "same/different chart" to compare the communities we studied.  We compared both the Community Pictures and the Community Information and Answers
The chart in PDF format can be downloaded from Comparison.pdf and printed on legal size paper.

Similarities & Differences Chart

During class brainstorming the students noted that the basic community places were the same; homes, schools, parks, stores, recreation centres, gas stations, and restaurants.  When reading the Community Questions and Answers they saw many similarities.  While filling out their comparison charts it was most often the differences that they noted.

Between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Kangiqsualujjuaq, Quebec
Winnipeg has sidewalks. Kangiqsualujjuaq has no sidewalks.
Winnipeg is a city community. Kangiqsualujjuaq is a rural community.
Both communities have stop signs. Kangiqsualujjuaq has Inuit writing on its stop sign.
Both communities have lots of snow. There are snowmobiles at the store in Kangiqsualujjuaq. We don't use snowmobiles to get around in Winnipeg.
We both walk to school because in Kangiqsualujjuaq only the kindergarten take the bus. Winnipeg's restaurant and store have murals painted on them.
It takes us a few minutes to get to the hospital. Our hospital is close to our homes so we don't have to fly an hour to go to the hospital or go to Montreal if it is serious. The yards are bigger around the houses in Kangiqsualujjuaq.
They have an Shell gas station and we have Shell in Winnipeg. 30 years ago the people in  Kangiqsualujjuaq lived in igloos.
We both have modern looking houses. You can not get to Kangiqsualujjuaq on a road.
We both have police officers to keep us safe. In Kangiqsualujjuaq sometimes their parents make their parkas.
Their wood shed is the same size as a dog house here. We have more people in Winnipeg than they have in their village.
We both carry our supplies in a school bag. "They are in the middle of nowhere and we are in the middle of somewhere."
We both have to plow snow but in Winnipeg we have to use sand and salt also. Their fathers go hunting and fishing.
Between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Tatla Lake, British Columbia
We play some of the same sports. Winnipeg is a city community. Tatla Lake is a rural community.
We both have Canadian flags flying in our communities. Winnipeg's restaurant and store have murals painted on them.
It takes a few minutes to get to the hospital but in Tatla School it takes 3 hours. Some people in Tatla Lake live in a log cabin.
We both have fire departments. They have a big lake in Tatla Lake.
We both have safety rules. Tatla Lake has books outside their library.
The Tatla Lake families hunt for deer, moose, cougars, beavers, bears and ducks for their meat. Tatla Lake has mountains around them.
We both have fences around our parks and playgrounds. They have a fence to keep the cougars out of their playground.
We both like living in our area. The library in Tatla Lake looks like a house.
Between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan
Both Winnipeg and Moose Jaw are city communities. They have a skateboard park in Moose Jaw.
We both have structures in our parks. They have an entrance to some tunnels.
The houses and parks look the same. Moose Jaw has no airport but Winnipeg has an airport.
We both have to keep our hands and feet to ourselves at school. The Moose Jaw school looks older than ours.
Between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Meadow Lake, Saskatchewqn
We have the same slides in our parks. Winnipeg is a city community. Meadow Lake is a rural community.
Our homes both have windows. Some students in Meadow Lake live in trailers.
They have the same school rules as us. Winnipeg's restaurant and store have murals painted on them.
We both have 911. The home in Meadow Lake looks newer than the home by our school.
We both have bowling alleys. Meadow Lake School is to Grade 6 and our school is to Grade 9.

Between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Victoria, British Columbia

We both live in between fire halls. Their school is in a suburb of Victoria. Our school is in the middle of the city.
We both have single houses and duplexes. Victoria has 380 students, 120 are in the French program. We have students in an English program although we do have French classes.
We have Sears and the Bay to buy things and so does Victoria. Victoria has only 3-4 days of snow and they would like more snow! We have many days of snows and we would like summer!
We both have shopping malls. Victoria has earthquake drills and we have fire drills.
We have the same school rules. Victoria's drinking water comes to them through a tunnel in a mountain.
We both have 911.

We both play the same games.

We both have poles with electric wires.

Victoria has flowers and grass and a totem pole outside their library we don't have a yard outside our library only a sidewalk.
