Problem

To determine whether the size of the container will effect the growth of a crystal garden.

 Hypothesis

The crystal garden will be bigger in the biggest dish.

Things we need to make a CRYSTAL GARDEN

Charcoal briquettes (6)

15 ml ammonia (x 2)

90 ml salt (x2)

90 ml boiling water

90 ml laundry bluing

food colouring

shallow glass bowl ( x 2 )

mixing bowl

measuring spoons

mixing spoon

 Procedure  Watch Video

  1. Place the charcoal briquettes into shallow bowl.
  2. In the mixing bowl, combine ammonia, salt, water, and laundry bluing ; mix well.
  3. Add several drops of food colouring to the mixture.
  4. Pour the mixture over the briquettes.
  5. Place your bowl in a place where it will not be disturbed, and where it will be easy for you to make daily observations. Write your observations on your Observations Sheet.

 Conclusion

The crystal garden grows the biggest in the smallest bowl. This experiment shows a chemical change.
