Homework  Policy for Grades 5 to 8 Students:

Every teacher's hope is that each student will develop a sense of responsibility and acquire efficient work habits needed for the challenging work force that lies ahead.  However the school cannot do it alone.  It is important that parents take an active part in their child's schooling.  For parents, homework is like a window through which they  can look in and see what their child learns at school.  It is with you as partners in your children's education that we can help them acquire skills that they will need in the 21st century.

    Time needed

We, at school, feel that homework has its place in each child's learning.  How much homework is too much?  A good way to decide on a reasonable amount of time to spend on homework is to add 0 to the grade.  Therefore, grade 5 students could spend about 50 minutes on homework, grade 6, 60 minutes, grade 7,  70 minutes and grade 8, 80 minutes.

    Type of homework

For the most part, homework is given out to reinforce what the child learns at school,  to instill good work habits and to encourage independent study so that it lays the groundwork for lifelong learning.

At the grade 5 level, homework should consist of a nightly reading period.  It could also involve practicing math facts, studying spelling words (both in French  and English) reviewing notes, completing tasks not finished during the day, and working on short term projects.

At the grades 6, 7 and 8 the nature of homework changes.   Reading and completing tasks not finished during the day are still part of homework.   However, at those levels, children are expected to do work more on their own by preparing long term assignments or projects thus promoting responsibility and independence on the part of the students.

At the grades 5 and 6 levels

Consequences for incomplete homework or homework not done:

In the event that homework is not done, the teachers will have the students stay in during the noon hour to do /complete the homework.  We urge all students to do their homework promptly as we hope that noon hour detention does not become a habit.

At the end of each month, a form letter will go home to the parents/guardians informing them about the homework that hasn't been done.  We will ask you, the parent/guardian to sign the form and return it to school promptly.   Students who have too many late or incomplete assignments may lose privileges such as noon activities, dances, sports field trips or special events.

Rewards

On the other hand, students at the grade 5 and 6 levels who do their homework diligently will have the  satisfaction of developing good organizational skills and work habits that will prepare them for Junior/Senior High and for the work force.  They will, of course, be able to participate in noon activities, dances, sports field trips, and special events.

For students at the grade 7 and 8 level

Consequences for incomplete or homework not done:

  1.     A form letter goes home informing parents/guardians about the assignment project that hasn't been handed in.  We will ask you, the parent/guardian to sign the form letter and the student must return the form letter to the school promptly along with the finished assignment/project.
  2. If the assignment/project isn't done by the prescribed date on the letter, the student gets a mark of zero.
  3. If too many assignments/projects are not completed on time then privileges such as dances, etc. will be taken away from these students.

Code of Conduct

We have developed a new code of conduct which offers three rules:

bullet   Be Ready
bullet  Be Responsible
bulletBe Respectful

Every year, a brochure about our code of conduct goes home with our first newsletter for parents to keep as a reference throughout the year.   A more explicit plan is kept at school and is given out to parents who would like to see it.  To receive either of these school policies, please contact the school and we will be glad to send them out to the parents who request them.
