NURSERY/KINDERGARTEN
Play With A Purpose!
The program is geared to provide social interaction and to develop students'
math, reading, social, and school readiness skills, and language development
through play, activity/learning centres, and exposure to children’s
literature. The classes are multi-aged with nursery and kindergarten students
grouped together. Instruction is child centred and creativity is fostered.
Emphasis is on the development of the whole child.
Children who will be four years old by December 31 and reside within the
boundaries of the Winnipeg School Division No. 1 can be registered for the
Nursery program. Children who will be five years old by December 31 can be
registered for the Kindergarten program. Kindergarten children out of the
Division will be accepted only if there is space available and if they require
no additional special resources.
Parents/guardians may register their children at the school office after the
Winter Break for the school term beginning the next September. Your child’s
birth certificate or Manitoba Health Certificate may be used as proof of your
child’s birth. Please bring either at time of registration
ELEMENTARY PROGRAM
Rockwood School offers an elementary school program from grades 1-6.
Classrooms are either in one or two grade groupings. Teachers use best teaching
practices and parental involvement is encouraged. There are many activities that
enrich your child’s school experience such as day camp, exposure to the arts,
integration of technology, field trips, performance opportunities, strong visual
arts programming, sports, and building a sense of commitment to community
through outreach programs. There is specialist programming in Music, French, and
Physical Education.
ELEMENTARY ALTERNATIVE PROGRAM
This is a Divisional program that utilizes muti-age groupings, student-centred,
activity-based, thematic learning, and a high degree of parental involvement.
While all our classrooms at Rockwood include some or all of these aspects, this
program consistently provide programming that takes these factors into
consideration. The students are grouped in Grades 1-3 and in Grades 4-6
classrooms. A strong sense of community is developed with younger children
benefiting from the support of older children.
Application forms are available from the school and are accepted for
registration for the Alternative Program beginning the first day of school in
the year prior to your children being in grade one. In addition, registration in
the alternative program is accepted at any time if space is available, in your
children's current school year. An information session on all of the grade one
programs is held in February.

to perform for others at monthly assemblies, the Remembrance Day Assembly,

For many children music experiences become a particular source of pleasure
and self-esteem; for others an opportunity for musical expression through group
participation. Though children’s musical abilities may vary greatly, all
children benefit from a wide range of musical experiences.
