Diversity of Living Things (Grade 6 Science)

Animal Diversity Web - A good source for information about the hierarchy of categorizing animals. Use the menu under the title for more resources.

Classification of Living Things - excellent site for brief information on all subjects. Includes definitions, pronunciation, very good visuals. Tutorials on each topic.

Microbe World -Bacteria, not just germs  - discusses all types of microbes including archaea, bacteria, fungi, protista, viruses, microbial mergers. Excellent illustrations.

Trees

Trees are Terrific - from the University of Illinois - Pierre - a lively acorn - gives kids the low down on trees and why we need them. Young children, 5-8 years old (K-2) learn the parts of a tree, all about leaves and how trees change during the different seasons. It is a wonderful way for young students to learn about trees.

Boreal Forest - Lakehead University - Site includes educational resources (lesson plans and a virtual tour of Bowater's Thunder Bay Pulp and Paper Mill) and information about the animals of the boreal forest. "Over 85 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, 80 species of amphibians and reptiles, 160 species of fish, and 3,200 species of plants; most of them are found in the boreal forest."

Boreal Forest - The Atlas of Canada - Fr/Eng - This is one of the best sources of maps about Canada. This part of the site has good information about the boreal forest, including images and maps, and facts about factors that affect the health of the forest.

Boreal Forest Network - The Boreal Forest Network is an organization of environmentalists, indigenous peoples and scientists concerned with the protection and sustainable use of the boreal forest, one of the three great forest systems of the world."

Canada's Boreal Forests - Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society - National grassroots action committee. This link takes you directly to the Manitoba concerns and actions. Site includes a mini slideshow of the Manitoba wilderness.

Canadian Boreal Initiative - Fr/Eng - Good source for very current information.
