Resource Program

The emphasis of the resource program in The Winnipeg School Division is to provide supports to teachers and their students with exceptional needs so that these students may progress successfully within the mainstream of education. The type of support will vary in each situation depending on the individual needs of the child, but may come from one, or a combination of consultation, collaboration, or direct service.

Our emphasis at École Riverview School is to provide support to students who are encountering learning difficulties, and to their teachers, so that these students may progress personally, socially, and educationally within the mainstream of education.

Students who have academic/behavioural needs are referred to the resource program by their teachers. Conferencing, classroom observations, diagnostic assessments, diagnosis, prescription and data collection occur following individual referrals. Instructional strategies, materials, programs, assessment information and ideas are shared with classroom teachers, teacher assistants and parent(s)/guardian(s).

Programs are designed to meet the needs of the students, are implemented and monitored with ongoing evaluation, and continuous individual record keeping. Direct service (tutoring) to students (individual and small group) is also provided by the resource teacher, teacher assistants, and trained volunteers.

Other responsibilities of the resource teacher entail assistance with or coordination of:

  • the Early Identification Program (assessment of all Kindergarten children) with conferences held three times a year (N-Gr. 3).

  • the Basic Motor Skills Program

  • The Volunteer Program -recruitment, interviewing, orientation, training, supervising, follow-up and recognition of volunteers.

  • Referrals to Child Guidance Clinic.

  • Referrals to all the various Special Education programs and to the Diagnostic Learning Centre.

  • Consultation and collaboration with Child Guidance Clinic personnel.

  • Enrichment Program

  • Home reading program.

The focus of the resource teacher program is on enhancement of personal growth whereby everyone on the team works together to promote successful learning experiences for every student.
