There are five strands that encompass the Physical Education curriculum.  They are: Movement, Fitness Management, Safety, Personal and Social Management, and Healthy Lifestyle Practices.

Movement – students demonstrate competency in selected movement skills and knowledge of movement development and physical activities with respect to different types of learning experiences, environment and cultures

Fitness Management – students demonstrate the ability to develop and follow a personal fitness plan for lifelong physical activity and well-being

Safety – students will demonstrate safe and responsible behaviours to manage risks and prevent injuries in physical activity and in daily living

Personal and Social Management – students will demonstrate the ability to develop self understanding, to make health-enhancing decisions, to work cooperatively and fairly with others, and to build positive relationships with others

Healthy Lifestyle Practices – students will demonstrate an ability to make informed decisions for healthy living related to personal health practices and active living

Primary Level

Basic movement skills (running, jumping, hopping, galloping, skipping, rolling, underhand throwing, overhand throwing, striking, kicking, catching, bouncing, static and dynamic balance) are emphasized, with an increasing level of difficulty and skills progression at various age/ability levels.  Students are introduced and contribute to regular participation in physical activity for fun, health and fitness.  Students learn to show respect for safety of self and others by following rules and regulations.  They will exhibit positive attitudes towards learning, growth and personal health, while being sensitive to the needs and abilities of others.  With the continued efforts of the school and lessons reinforced at home, the students will appreciate and value the benefits of healthy lifestyle practices for a healthy body.

Intermediate Level

A continuum is stressed on the proper technique of the basic movement skills, as the skills are needed for participation in more sport specific units.  The students will learn to self assess and help other students with their skill growth and develop, as well as coming up with team concepts of strategy and the importance of cooperation.  The students will learn to set fitness goals and promote the safety aspect by being fantastic role models.  They will continue to learn about themselves as student athletes, “one who thinks while doing,” and they’ll be provided with plenty of opportunities for social interaction.  The intermediate students will be given more leadership roles through various classroom, school and community opportunities to help with their growth.
