Throughout our study of Canada and
our “Canadascape” theme the students are involved in a number of
activities in order to learn more about and appreciate many aspects of
their country. As the students work through this theme using the
Internet, they are developing the following skills: reading and writing,
organizing information, locating resources, analyzing the appropriateness
of materials, small and large group discussion, independent and team
production, storage and retrieval of data and publishing information.

Work in one particular
project has required students to employ the stages of the writing process
to research and publish a written project detailing a significant Canadian
individual or animal of their choice.
The
grade four students have begun to present their Canadian biography
projects. Everyone is keen to be a member of the audience during these
inquiry presentations. To date we have learned about Burton Cummings,
Avril Lavigne, Ava Avila and Cindy Klassen.

Our project to learn about the significance of the
horse to Canadian culture and civilization is almost complete. During this
integrated Social Studies/English Language Arts project, students have been employing research and map
skills, chart reading and construction ability, as well as broadening
their cultural knowledge.

Information
about one of our latest art projects!
Everyone from our class was
delighted to present a reader’s theatre adaptation of Betsy Who Cried
Wolf. All of the students worked very enthusiastically and
diligently to present scheduled performances to various classrooms and
guests.

Our study of the Gray Wolf
across Canada was celebrated during our gallery walk. The children created
wonderful sketches with the help of resident artist Ella Kochenash. Here
is some of their drawings.
