Welcome to room 204!

Dear Parents, Welcome to one of the most incredible years your child will have in his /her school career.

First grade is an exciting year as children embark upon new adventures in learning. This is a year of important transitions, as well as one in which the acquisition of new skills is accelerated.

So much happen in first grade! Because of this parents, as well as children may have apprehensions about what will happen. It is extremely important to keep in mind that we all build on small successes. Each child will be progressing at his or her own rate, acquiring skills as he/she is developmentally ready.

To succeed, there needs to be an open communication between home and school. Your child needs to know that we work together. If you have any concerns or questions during the school year please don’t hesitate to call or e-mail me immediately. My school e-mail is sharrison@wsd1.org.

There are many different areas of study that your child will be introduced to. I would like to take this opportunity to provide you with a brief outline of the grade one program.

Language Arts

The Manitoba Language Curriculum identifies six strands of language proficiency (listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing and representing).

Reading

Reading research has proven that children learn by reading. Your child will be reading every day from a variety of sources (books, poems, charts, songs, messages and environmental print.) Your child will be expected to take home books at his/her reading level and practice reading with you or an older sibling.

Writing

Students will be exploring different writing techniques. They will be encouraged to write stories, poems and journal writing. They will be using both innovative and conventional spelling patterns in their writing.

Spelling

The students will be learning the consonant and short and long vowel sounds. They will be encouraged to use these phonetic strategies in their daily work.

Speaking

The students will be expected to express their ideas during large and small group discussions. They will also be expected to participate during Show and Tell.

Mathematics

The mathematics program is activity based. As each new concept is introduced, the students will use concrete materials, pictoral activities and finally abstract concepts.
