Free Press Tour
by Karly
On
September 29, room 105 went to the Winnipeg Free Press Building. Room 105 took a transit
bus to get there. We found many interesting things about it. We first went up the
escalator where our tour guide brought us to a long hall. She told us that the walls and
floors were hollow. They were hollow because if they ever wanted to extend a room or make
it smaller it wouldnt need any construction. The floors were hollow so the cords
connecting the computers would be running in between the cement and tiles. Next, we went
to the library. In the library she showed us some clippings of the newspaper. We saw a few
pictures of the old Winnipeg Free Press Building. She told us that this was the only
building that wasnt in the downtown area. When they built this one they all decided
to bring a piece of the old building with them so they brought a piece of the arch. She
also told us this building was the 7th building they were in. Afterwards she showed us
some of the pictures of movie stars that the film producers who made it sent in. She told
us that the movie producers wanted it put in the paper for advertisement {such as Titanic
and Spice World}. Our tour guide then took us where the news reporters and editors worked.
There were many computers in there. The ones I really noticed were the ones with the large
monitors. These monitors were used to see how the page of the newspaper was going to look.
They needed to know how all the lettering and pictures were going to work. A man who was
sitting behind us showed us how editing worked. Of course its just checking for
mistakes and better ways of saying things. Our tour guide brought us to a long table where
there were 2 pieces of paper which was were she told us that there are 4 stages of color
to print a colored newspaper. The four colors were yellow, magenta, cyan, and black. After
we went to where they made steel newsprint so they could print the newspaper. The tour
guide said she wasnt going to use this one so we could take this one to the
classroom. Just before we went home she showed us the storage room where there were tons
of newspapers and she told us that they had a couple of trucks that would take it to where
it belongs. Then we said our good byes and we were off to take our transit bus. When we
got back they wrote facts about the Winnipeg Free Press Building.
Mcgillvary Falls
By Arlene
On October 8th rooms 105, 111 and 10 people from P8 went
for a hike to Mcgillvary Falls. Mcgillvary Falls is a 2 hour drive. We took 2 buses. One
bus line was called the Fehr-Way and the other was called The Beaver Bus Line. On the bus
there was a t.v.
The hike was 2 miles on which we were supposed to see the falls but unfortunately we
never saw the falls because the beaver dam ruined the path to the falls. After we saw that
the beaver dam we went back to the parking lot and went to the Bird Sanctuary, which was
farther up the rode. There were 3,000 birds there on that day but usually there are
18,000. The geese like to go there because they cant get hunted and they get fed
barley. When the Canada geese migrate they go to Wisconsin. Even if it snowed there they
still go because they have dont as severe a winter and they still get food because
the snow there isnt as high as it is here in Winnipeg. A couple of years ago the
population of the geese decreased because of a fatal disease.

Geraniums in Room 111
By Russell
Room 111 was very busy in the the afternoon of Oct. 9th.
They were busy planting geraniums. That afternoon everybody got a pot and a plant. The
teacher then handed out soil. First we had to put two cups of soil into the pot. Then we
put in our geranium. We tried to hold it in position and fill the pot up with soil at
least two centimetres from the top. Then we took a cup and watered the geranium. When we
finished doing all that, we put it in a sunny place for about a week. While it is there
you still have to water it to keep it alive. After that time we should have a perfectly
good geranium.
So you should think about making planting yourself one. If you do you are not only
planting a geranium, but you are also having fun. If you do be prepared for a big mess to
clean up afterwards. If you are a parent, this may a good time to get together with your
child/children and have some quality time together and have some fun. To end the activity
how about a final mud fight?

Trip to Oak Hammock Marsh
By Justin
On 28th of September room 107 and 109 went to Oak Hammock
Marsh. They left at about 10:00 a.m. They walked to the Interpretive Centre and did
something called "The Explorer". The Explorer is an activity that you go around
the building and find questions and answer them on your way. Then room 107 and 109 did an
activity called "All About Owls". That is where they learned about owls. Then
after they had lunch they went Critter Dipping. Critter Dipping is when you put a fishing
net in the marsh and scoop up some insects. Then they put the insects into a pail. They
all had a good time.
