Braille
By Audrey

On February 29th a man came to our school. The man’s name was Shep Shell. Mr. Shep Shell was not just an ordinary man, he was blind. Mr. Shep Shell came to our school to talk about being blind and about Braille. Braille is a way of reading for people with no sight. Braille has only six dots and is formed in different ways for every letter in the alphabet. Blind people read Braille by touching the dots on the page. Blind people just don’t use Braille; they can use a computer too! How? Well the computers that they use are different from the computers that we use. The computers that they use talk! All they do is type in whatever they want and the computer says what the person typed in. Mr. Shep Shell typed in something on his computer and the computer said what he typed in! It said it really fast that we couldn’t understand what it said. We found the visit interesting.

Hansel and Gretel Opera
by Katrina

On February 10th room 111, P8, P7 and some students from room 105 went to see an opera at the Concert Hall. It was called Hansel and Gretel. It was like the book only it was changed in some ways so that it was not exactly like the book. They did it all in singing instead of in words like most plays are. The Opera singers were very good. There were 3 acts in this play. They were all very good. At the end of each act the curtain would go down for a couple of minutes so the Opera singers could relax and refresh their voices. Most of the people that went to the Opera had a favorite part. Mostly it was the part when the angels came out. Most of the kids from room111 liked the Opera. Others preferred just plain plays done all in words and others did not really like plays done all in singing.

St. John’s Presentation
By Jessica

On February 15th, some people and the principal from St. John’s came to Ralph Brown to do a presentation for all the grade sixes. They first show some pictures of the teachers and classes and what kind of help there is at St. John’s. After that they showed us a dance that they learn in dance class. Later, they tried to teach some grade sixes to dance. That was really cool. It almost makes you want to go to St. John’s now.

Presentation from U of M
by Kirk

On February 14th Renee and Jennifer from University of Manitoba came to our school. Room 111 had a presentation on what would be the best order of gravel, coal, sand, and cotton for a filter. Room 111 was divided into groups and they had to think of the best way to design a filter and put it down on a piece of paper and give it to Renee. She would put it in a cup with a hole in the bottom. Then we got another cup that we had to keep under the “filter”. Then they poured dirty water into the cup with the “filter” and waited. In a few minutes some water came through.

Most of the students from grades 5 to 8 participated in the fun. They were dancing and singing to their favorite songs! In the kitchen, were food and can drinks such as chips and cokes. They were sold for only .50! Since all the children enjoyed and participated in the dance, Mr. Charney will be having one more dance in May or June!
