The Free Press Visit
by Jennifer Mas and Nicholas Delorme

On Wednesday, November 9, 1995 a reporter came and visited us from the Winnipeg Free Press. She spoke to us about being a reporter and how to write a story of interest for the readers. We met in Room 104. The group consisted of only Room 105 students. Treena Khan talked to us about how the Winnipeg

Free Press paper business ran, how to select a story to write about and how the interviews became paper articles.

Grandparenting
by Rebecca Wolinski

On November 23 grade 5 students of Ralph Brown School went to the Holy Family Nursing home to meet our adopted grandparents. It was very interesting talking to them. They told us how old they were, where they were born, when they were born, if they had any brothers or sisters, and if they had any daughters or sons. The first activity that we did with them was baking cookies. Then they showed us where they lived and then it was time to go back to school. At first I felt kind of nervous about meeting my grandparent but after I met mine, I wasn't so nervous. I really enjoyed going there and visiting them. I think they were happy about us visiting.

Grandparenting
by Tommy Fuczyla

Last month some grade 5 students were chosen to participate in the grandparenting program. This month we went to meet our grandparents at Holy Family Nursing Home. There where lots of grandparents named Mary. We all made cookies out of cornflakes, nuts, butter, raisins, cocoa, sugar and water. It was fun. After that we had to unscramble words. It was a cookie scramble sheet. Then it was time to leave. My grandparent's name was Mary. I had to take her to her room. She lives on the second floor. I had a great time and I think my grandparent had a wonderful time.

Making Ice-cream
by Pat Roche

On Monday, January 15th, Room 105 did a Science Experiment that you would like! We made Vanilla Ice- cream. Mrs. Kilcup and Mrs. K. helped in the making. First, we mixed 1/4 cup of whipping cream, 1/2 cup of milk, 1/8 cup of white sugar and 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla extract in a small Zip-lock bag. Then we put 1/4 cup salt and 1 lb. of ice in a large Zip-lock bag and added the small bag inside the big one, without pouring out the contents of either bag. After that, we shook the bag until the contents in the small bag were stiff. Then we ate it. It was real.

Isaac Newton's Play
by Pat Roche

On Thursday, December 14th, 1995, Mrs. Barr, Mrs. Duffy, Miss Johnson, Mr. Chubey, Mrs. Moen and Mrs. Melnyk's classes went to Isaac Newton High School on Parr St. and Aberdeen St. We went at 9:15 a.m. and came back at 11:30 a.m.. We had to walk there because there were too many people to get on a bus. When we got there we went to the gym and we had to sit on the floor. At the beginning of the play they were trying out for the Christmas Play. They had to do a dance and this one guy asked to do his own kind of dance. Guess what he did? Breakdancing! He flipped backwards over the stage and he even did turns on his back. Then they danced to some Boyz II Men songs. After that they sang Santa Baby, Winter Wonderland and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. It was great!

The Limo Ride
by Cassandra Tycholiz and Kelsey Porter

Last month we went on a limo ride. These were the people that went: Kelsey Porter, Cassandra and Elizabeth Tycholiz, Kimberly, and Kyler. We went because we sold the most chocolates. For lunch we went to Pizza Hut. The driver turned the T. V. on for us when we were coming back to school. It was fun.

Shaughnessy Park's Nutcracker

What a show! The grade 4 to 8 students of Shaughnessy Park produced the Nutcracker drama play. Lot's of colorful backdrops, banners and costumes added to the dance routines. Room 105 and 111 attended the production on Thursday, December 21st. The students took the school bus to and from with Ms. Harrison accompanying Mrs. Barr and Mrs. Duffy. Mrs. Grant, a parent volunteer, also came along to help.

Gas Station Theatre
by Mitchell Zebrasky

On December 13, P5 went to the Gas Station Theater to the fantastic play of the Nightingale. The characters were: a silver-throated Nightingale, a gentle fisherman and a kitchen maid. The fisherman and the maid fell in love when they saw each other. Other characters were: the evil music master, the very ill Emperor, the kind Island King, the gold fish keeper and the great white bird of death. The play took place in a forest and the emperor's palace. I think the best part was where the great white bird of death sang to the Emperor. Then came the Nightingale who sang its song of love. The great white bird of death left the Emperor but it said, "I'll return some day to take you to Heaven."

Gas Station Theater
by Dana Slessor-Cobb

On December 13, I went to the Nightingale play at the Gas Station Theater. It was originally a Chinese folk tale but was retold by North Americans. It was a very good show that was retold. The Nightingale is about a bird who had the voice of an angel and the wisdom of a wise man. Since we were the only class from our school it made the show special. I would have taken the whole school with us I liked it so much.

The Mennonite Village
by Irwin Juacalla

It was Friday, December the 1st, 1995. The classes of Mrs. Melynk, Mrs. McAlpine, Mrs. Poworoznyk, Mrs. Duffy, Miss. Johnston, Mrs. Barr and some teacher assistants wanted to learn about the pioneers. They planned a field trip to Steinbach to see the Mennonite Village of the Pioneer Days. The 3 school busses arrived. They started their trip to Steinbach at 9:30 a.m. They got to Steinbach at 10:30 a.m. First they went into the building and took off their jackets and school bags. Then they went to the little log cabin. It was warm inside. They sat down on chairs. Two ladies told them a story that was real about the little log cabin. After the two ladies told them a story, the children went on a sleigh ride. Two horses were pulling them. After the sleigh ride they were off to the gallery. They saw lots of things that pioneers used in the olden days. When they got on the quilting section there were three ladies making a quilt. There were some quilts finished which were displayed on the side. When they were done looking at the gallery they started to get hungry so they started to eat their lunches. They still had some time after lunch so the teachers decided to take the kids for another sleigh ride. Some of the grades 5's and 6's were having fun by jumping off the sleigh. Mrs. Duffy was also pushing some of the grades 5's and 6's off the sleigh. After the ride they all had to rest so they watched a school sing Christmas songs. When they got back to school they all had a treat from their teachers. They all got 2 cookies and a cup of chocolate milk.

Christmas Concert
by Tyler Sanderson and Andrea Kelpin

On Wednesday, December the 20th, 1995 all the classes from Ralph Brown School participated in singing Christmas songs. Some children from Ralph Brown were chosen to be in the Christmas play. The Christmas play was all about an elf named Georgena who wanted to make new stories out of the old ones. The primary play was all about Christmas trees who wanted Santa to chose them and only one Christmas tree knew what Christmas meant. The intermediate choir sang three Christmas songs. They were "No School Tomorrow", O Holy Night and Let Those Merry Bells Ring". The Intermediate choir used bells and sleigh bells during the song. The primary choir sang "Somebody Snitched On Me" and "Angel's Lullabye". At the end of the concert everyone applauded for Mrs. Harrison's hard work. The audience also applauded the accompanist, Mrs. Bertha Klassen and the choir. Mrs. Harrison got a poinsettia.
