The Queenston
School Kindergarten program is an activity based program
where individual learning centers and large group
instruction are part of the daily routine. The Kindergarten
program is based on Manitoba Curriculum Guides for the
following subject areas; Language Arts, Mathematics, Social
Studies, Science, Health and Physical Education. These
subject areas are integrated through themes and activity
centers.
The activity-based classroom includes centers:
Block and Toy Area, Dramatic Play, Sand and Water, Paint Easels, Science Table, Library, Computer Center, Math Center, Listening Center, Education Toys, Games and Puzzles Art Center, Puppet Place and Writing Center.
A typical day would
include: an opening circle time with all schedule, calendar,
supportive readings of poems and chants; free play at
activity centers and a casual snack. Throughout individuals
or small groups are engaged in teacher directed activities
that enrich or extend a theme or project and/or reinforce
specific skills. Closing circle time includes a sharing
time, story, games, songs or other scheduled activities such
as gym,
Book Buddies, a weekly library visit conducted by the
teacher-librarian, a weekly computer class conducted by the
technology teacher to teach computer skills.
Primary
The primary classes are child-centered, activity-based classroom
where children are actively involved in their learning.
Language Arts:
The conceptual framework of the English Language Arts curriculum
identifies 6 strands: listening, speaking, reading, writing,
viewing and representing. All areas are developmental and
open ended.
The curriculum identifies 5 general outcomes the students will
be working towards throughout their school experiences.
They are:
*To explore thoughts, ideas, feelings and experience
*To comprehend & respond personally and critically to oral, written
and media texts
*To manage ideas and information
*To enhance the clarity and artistry of communication
*To celebrate and build community
Mathematics
The Manitoba curriculum guide has 6 strands in mathematics.
The goals for each strand remains the same for each grade level
although the level of difficulty and proficiency increase.
The main goals are:
*Use mathematics confidently to solve problems
*Exhibit a positive attitude towards mathematics
*Communicate mathematically
*Appreciate and value mathematics and its contributions to
civilization
* Reason mathematically
*Commit themselves to lifelong learning
*Become mathematics-ally literate adults, using mathematics to
contribute to society
Various themes are used in the primary classrooms throughout the year.
