PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
The coming of May means it’s been eight months since school started in September, which hardly seems possible. The next two months will be jam packed with lots of learning activities.
Some special events take place every spring at Queenston –spirit days, field trips, Field Day, the QSAC Carnival and of course the farewell celebration for our grade six students. This year Queenston will be hosting Manitoba Day on May 12. Also grade 1 to 6 students and adults will get active at the University of Manitoba on May 21. A letter with more information will be sent home this week. Check this newsletter and our calendar for more information about these and other events.
Congratulations Mrs. Juttner on the occasion of her retirement. Thank-you for many years of service to the students of the Winnipeg School Division!
Daphne Nordal
Student Council
As Queenston’s Student Council, we have set five spirit days in May, as outlined below. We hope you can have fun with these ideas. Mrs. Nordal asked that we remind everyone of some things. Please make sure that whatever you wear will not keep you from working and moving safely in the school and on the grounds.
May 26 Stuffed Animal Day: Carry one with you.
May 27 Celebrity Day: Dress as your favourite celebrity -keep it appropriate for school.
May 28 Bad Hair Day: Have a bad hair day, on purpose. One piece of advice….don’t do anything that can’t be undone!
May 29 Sport Day: Dress for your favourite sport -keep it appropriate for school.
May 30 Crazy Hat Day: Wear a nice one, a funny one or weird one –the one day you can wear a hat in class.
Have Fun,
Your Student Council
Do not use wheeled vehicles on the grounds from 8:40 AM to 3:40 PM. This includes bikes, skateboards, scooters, roller blades and other wheeled vehicles.
Sun Proof / Sun Smart
According to statistics Canada, one person out of seven will likely suffer significant health concerns as a result of the harmful effects of the sun. Please ensure that you child is protected by a hat and sunscreen.
Protection is needed every day, as students are outside at recess and lunchtime. However, it can be even more important on a field trip when a class may spend a significant amount of time out of doors. Please have your child put sunscreen on before leaving for a fieldtrip, and send some along, so the student can reapply later.
ROOF TOP PHOTO
Lifetouch will be here to do the annual Roof Top photo on _________________ at 2:30 p.m. Order forms are in the newsletter.
Parents of Nursery students are welcome to bring their children to the play structure at that time if they would like them included in the photo.
Winnipeg Harvest
We are asking students to bring a can of vegetables to school for harvest. The grade 5 class will come around to classrooms to collect the cans on Wednesday, May 7.
Sports News
What an intense final! Both teams played so hard that it was difficult to announce a winner. Team I finally came out victorious by a very close score of 14 to 12 over Team D. Congratulations to all of the participants!

Once again, a big “bouquet to the Grade 6 leaders. You do it all so
efficiently! We do not know what we will do without you, but you are certainly
ready for bigger and better leadership challenges.
UP AND COMING……
Intramural Floor Hockey. Seventy four Grades 4-6 students have signed up for this activity. It should be quite a league!
All Star Field Day
On Thursday, June 12th. p.m., we are planning our All Star Field Day.
All students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 will participate in this cross graded activity. Students will rotate through a variety of field events where they earn stars for participating and accomplishing tasks. There are approximately 20 activities supervised by teachers and parents. If you would be willing to supervise a station for field day, please fill in the portion and return it to Linda Juttner.
In the event of rain, all activities will be
moved inside.
The winner of the Manitoba Young reader’s Choice Award for 2008 is We All Fall Down by Eric Walters. There will be an award presentation in the fall and also the opportunity for children to attend the presentation luncheon. A total of 48 Queenston students from grade 4,5, & 6 successfully met the criterion of reading at least 3 titles from the list and voted for their favorite. This total was an all time high and set a new record for next year’s MYRCA readership (students) to follow. We do LOVE to read!
BOOK CLUB
The Book Club is meeting in the library on Monday, May 26th ,2008 at 3:30 pm. It is also an opportunity for students to read books by the same author and discuss whether or not it successfully met the genre’s criteria and their evaluation of what makes a good book by Book Club standards. This year we are reading Eric Walters novels because he won the MYRCA award. Discussion is often heated and we learn lots about character development. It is not always about the character(s) in the books! Mrs Donogh will be hosting goodies for this meeting.
LIBRARY RENEWAL
We have word that the carpet in the library is to be replaced during this school year. I will be looking for volunteers to help pack up the books to be moved in order to facillitate the installation. We are hoping that inconvenience to classroom programing will be minimal with teachers borrowing books for class use well before our pack up date. The entire process is scheduled to take two weeks. We will keep you posted. Are you interested in helping us? Contact Mrs Donogh or Mrs Ferrante.
REMINDERS
There is NO Computer Club held during the months of May and June. Some students will be finishing project work – watch for lunch permission notes if this applies to your child.
It is still important to return all books on the assigned classroom library book exchange day. Please remind your child(ren) to return their library materials!
