January 2009
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Queenston Families,
May 2009 find your family happy, healthy and together. I hope everyone had an enjoyable break, plenty of food, and time to relax with family.
Our clerk, Elaine Rawsthorne, is sending newsletters via email and email reminders about early dismissals, school closures, due dates and other information. If you wish to receive the emails, just email Elaine at
erawsth@wsd1.org. On our web page (http://www.wsd1.org/queenst/default.html), I have linked teachers’ email addresses with their names. Just click on the teacher’s name to send an email. Our concert, December Nights December Lights, was a great success. Here’s a big thank-you to everyone who worked so hard to make our holiday celebration so special.
Our Primary Chess Club will start at noon on January 20, and go for 8 sessions. Students who are in the lunch program will join us in the library by 12:20 pm, while those not in lunch program will have lunch with me in the library. Information on our Intermediate Chess Club will be out soon.
As you know, Queenston families participated in Take Pride Winnipeg’s plastic bag recycling project. We have received a box of Frisbees, which are made from recycled plastic bags. When the weather is a little warmer, watch for frisbee fun on the playground.
Inside this newsletter, you will find our January calendar, as well as information about registration for new students.

Nursery Kindergarten Registration
2009-10 registration for Nursery, and students
new to Queenston School for Kindergarten through Grade 6 has begun. If you, or anyone you know, has a child who may be interested in attending Queenston School next fall, please register as soon as possible, so we have accurate enrolment figures to determine staffing needs. Children currently attending Queenston School are not required to register again.
Your Child’s Health
If your child has any health issues, please ensure that we are aware of them so that appropriate action can be taken, if necessary. Also, please keep us posted should there be any changes in existing conditions.
If your child is well enough to come to school, they are generally well enough to go out for recess. If a health issue may exclude a child from recess, please call your child’s teacher to discuss it.

JANUARY LIBRARY/LAB LOWDOWN
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
The New Year brings many new books to the Queenston Library and many are on display- check them out! Curl up and read while the wind howls and the snow blows.
“BEST OF THE BEST”
This is the time of year that award shows fill the television.
We are hoping that students will help us pick our own: Best Female Character, Best Male
Character, Best Animal Character, also Best Performance-Mystery, Historical, Fantasy, & Adventure for
Queenston’s 2009 “Best of the Best” Awards this year.
To nominate a book or character in a (genre) category check out the bulletin board.
Please help us gather some data for use in a project: Did you read the book first or go see the movie? Place your answer in the ballot box on the circulation desk and be sure to tell us the title and why.
MANITOBA YOUNG READERS CHOICE AWARD
Grade 4, 5 and 6 students are reading an amazing selection of
this year’s nominees and the results can be found on the charts in the library. Drop by and
look at how we are doing. Voting will be early in April and some children have already read the

Challenge quest-Can you read them all? Want to talk about the MYRCA nominees? Check out the blog spot on the Queenston homepage.
