Community Resource Facility
The room across from our library is our community Resource Room. It is
welcoming place for the parents to come and relax, meet their
neighbours or wait with their Nursery/Kindergarten children.
Guided Reading/Guided Math
Grades 1, 2, 3 classrooms have additional reading or Math support
through guide Reading, using levelled books, or Guided Math using
strategies from the Numeracy Project. a Resource teacher and a Resource
E. A. work in collaboration with classroom teachers to provide instruction
at each students' instructional level.
Reading Recovery
Two half-time reading recovery teachers work with at-risk Grade 1
students in a 1 on 1 instructional setting for 30 minutes a day.
Expository Reading Project
All grade 4-6 classroom teachers use instructional reading strategies
to assist students in developing the skills needed to improve non-narrative
expository forms of reading (e.g. Social Studies, Science, other non-fiction
materials/works). Classroom Libraries were provided with
additional expository, levelled reading materials to ensure
success for all learners.
Parental & Community Involvement
Parents play a vital role at principal Sparling School. There is an active
Parent Council that meets monthly, and parents volunteer throughout
the school. The Parent Council operates a daily lunch program for over
60 students and undertakes fundraising activities on behalf of the
students.
Attendance/Call Back System
Parents are called if their child is not at school, twice daily.
Newsletter
Each classroom submits a monthly report on the activities their classroom
is involved in. Information on school events, parent programs etc. are
included.
Sparling Assembly
Each month we have Sparling Award Assemblies where students are
honoured for their good work and contributions. Parents are invited to
attend.
Classroom Agendas
Grade 1-6 classrooms use agenda books that encourage daily home to
school communication.
Volunteer Program
Volunteers are working in classrooms and the library. Volunteers also
work on such activities as Math mentoring, enrichment programming
and language development.
Home Reading Program
The Nursery, Kindergarten and Grade 1 and 2 classrooms have a home
reading program. Students choose a book to take home for their parents
to read to them.
