Early School Years Program
Pinkham School is one of only six inner-city schools which has an E. S. Y. program. Staff consist of a Kindergarten teacher, a teaching assistant, and a halftime Family Learning Assistant. There is a Parent-Child Centre in the school which serves as a resource centre for parents. In addition to a telephone, computer, kitchen area and sitting area, there is a lending library of books, games, toys and videos. The program supports and encourages parental involvement in the educational process of their children. The classroom provides an active learning program with a focus on language development, known to be crucial to a child's success in school. Numerous family events are organized during the year to support the home-school connection.
The goals of the program are: 1. To enhance receptive and expressive language skills. 2. To enhance problem-solving strategies. 3. To enhance children's social and emotional development. 4. To assist parents to learn and use language skills with their children. 5. To increase parental involvement in the education of their children. 6. To provide leadership in schools to achieve E. S. Y. goals.
E. S. Y. staff take part in regular in-service training to refine skills in meeting these goals. The Family Learning Assistant makes contact with parents and children in the home or school. Learning activity kits are to shared during each home visit. ESY programs are designed to support parents as the child's first teacher, to provide an increased understanding of child development and the learning process. Parent participation is encouraged in the classroom.
