General Guidelines
The site will be designed in such a way as to meet professional selection criteria of other reputable institutions, for example:

bulletA statement of responsibility will be clearly indicated
bulletMain pages will be updated frequently
bulletDate of content update will be clearly indicated, where relevant
bulletA simple disclaimer will be present on relevant pages containing links to outside sites

As well, members of the web team may utilize MIT Libraries’ excellent guidelines "Writing for the Web" at http://macfadden.mit.edu:9500/webgroup/writing/index.html.

Style

1. The Library Support Services Secretary is responsible for overall style, theme, design and layouts, after consultation with web team.

2. Style guides will be maintained in writing, kept up to date, and implemented for at least a year at a time to ensure continuity. View current Style Guide.

3. Layouts and color schemes may be revised and changed periodically, but no more frequently than every six months to ensure continuity.

4. Hierarchy of pages and navigational structures will be clearly indicated and maintained, through the use of buttons, shared borders and a link to the top of the page for long, textual pages.

5. Only web-safe, non-dithering colors will be used (see www.lynda.com/hexh.html).

6. Images will be in gif format to maximize compression or in jpeg format to maximize quality

Links - General
Links to outside sites will be accompanied by an abstract where appropriate. A courtesy email will be sent to the site: 1) informing them of the link, 2) inviting them to visit the LSS site and preview our abstract, and 3) providing the URL of the page in question.

Links - Selection
Sites LSS links to should be evaluated using standard evaluation criteria, see guidelines:

bullet"Evaluating Internet Resources" by librarian Karen Hunt, from the Manitoba Library Association website
bullet"Evaluating Web-Based Resources: a Practical Perspective" from the Cyberlibrarians' Rest Stop

Disclaimer
On Internet Resources, Pathfinders, and any other pages containing links to other sites, a simple disclaimer should be present, to the effect of:

"These links are provided as an informational resource for teachers and teacher librarians. We rely on your professional judgment to decide when a site is suited to the age group you are working with. The Winnipeg School Division is not responsible for the content of these sites."

Metadata
LSS will utilize the Nordic Metadata Project Dublin Core Template at http://www.lub.lu.se/cgi-bin/nmdc.pl to describe full-text html documents as well as to describe the LSS home page, and the publications pages providing links to full text pdf publications. The controlled vocabulary option should be selected, and Library of Congress subject headings used.  The decision to use Nordic Project Dublin Core Template will be revisited at such time as the Manitoba Library Consortium adopts formal guidelines on metadata, or upon the consensus of the web team.

Software
LSS will use the software being used by the rest of WSD.
