Northwest Coast Longhouse
The group we are studying is the Northwest Coast homes. These are the steps that the Northwest Coast people used to make their homes. Steps: 1. Chop and split down massive cedar trees using beaver teeth and stone axes. 2. Dig descending steps to basement with digging sticks and haul dirt away in baskets. 3. Dig deep holes depth of man’s waist to support posts. 4. Smooth the posts and carve crests. 5. Raise the posts into deep holes. 6. Pack dirt around the posts to make them stable. 7. Two methods were used to build a wall. 8. The first method is: Planks are set on their sides and overlapped. They are then tied up to posts. 9. Method two: The planks are set up right into the slots found on a bottom and top piece of wood. 10. The roof was covered with loose planks with were held down by rocks and logs. 11. Cut out the hole in the roof for smoke and make a door. |
