Central Housing Registry
Information Clearinghouse
In 1999, Winnipeg Housing Rehabilitation Corporation, on behalf of the Migrancy Committee,
made application to the National Crime Prevention Centre, Community Mobilization Program,
for a grant to establish a computerized housing registry. These funds
provided start-up monies for the project which was completed with funds from the
federal GeoConnections program.
People who are planning a move are able to see a map of their current
school boundaries and vacancies that exist within those boundaries, as well as surrounding
areas. Other pertinent information is also displayed on the computer screen.
Access to this information is available in schools and agencies involved in serving
families and anywhere with internet access.
The goal in developing this registry and making it accessible to families
and agencies is to provide accurate and timely information about available rental housing
so that families will be able to keep their children within one school. Stability
within one school catchment area will enhance the students' opportunity of a quality
education.
This registry is in development and will open Spring 2005.
