To make these wizards we used triangles, a sphere and a square- so is this a maths lesson or an art lesson?
The first triangle you will  need is approx  20 cm on all sides.
Cut off the top (about 7 cm) to make the hat.

Use a wet toothbrush to brush the edges that will be stuck together.

Fold over the small  triangle to make a cone shape You will also use this process to make sleeves with a square piece of clay
Take the topless triangle, bend the sides together and stuff a paper towel inside to give it some bulk. This forms the body of the wizard. Leave the top open for the head, this also forms a collar
The head is made out of the sphere of clay , about the size of a ping pong ball. Roll it around in your hand and then pull a long neck out.
Stuff the neck into the collar. Attach the hat to the top of the head.
Squash the sleeves to the sides of the cloak.

Now you can add details like a face, feet, hands etc.

Remember while the clay is soft you can push and pull it into the position you want.
If you can’t get the paper towel out, don’t worry it will burn away to nothing during the firing.
Once the wizards are fired they can be painted or glazed. For some examples of finished work, click here to take a look at the work of our grade 3 class.
