A few notes from our
Art Teacher, Ann Rallison, about the making of these fabulous vessels:
I
was looking at the poster from the WAG advertising the exhibition
through the eyes of a child. The poster shows a collection of clay
pots, with lids, quite decorated. So I decided we would have a go at
making some vessels ourselves.
I
went to the gallery to check out the way the original ones were made
first.
We
made them by making two thumb pots and then sticking them lightly together
before we cut lids.
The
construction of three feet underneath was an interesting mathematical
problem, which the children solved very quickly.
We
made holes in to add beads, feathers etc once they were fired.
The
results are quite beautiful. It was a good project for the children to
tackle, as they had to look at 2/D images and make 3/D vessels. I
introduced the word vessel as opposed to pot or clay box to expand their
artistic vocabulary. Click on the thumbnails below to see a larger image.

Danny's Vessel
How I made it the vessel
1. I looked at the poster.
2. We got a ball of clay.
3. We cut the ball in half.
4. We scooped out the inside the middle.
5. We put the whole thing back together.
6. I designed it when it was wet.
7. It has three legs.
8. Then Ms. Rallison fired it.
9. Then we painted it.

Jamie's Vessel
First I looked at a poster. After that
we rounded the clay. And then we cut it in 2. We put it back together and
when it was back together Ms Rallison put it in the kiln. I think it looks
nice. |

Brandy's Vessel
Vessels
My vessel is going to have jewels in it. That means I will have a jewelry
box and a vessel for my jewels. It is a vessel that has a lid that opens,
and it's clipped on the pot. I think that my vessel is beautiful, gorgeous
and terrific. I put my favorite colour on it, blue. And other colours. Or
I'll put jokes and riddles in it. Or pop-up monsters. Or pictures. My
vessel's name is Beady, because it has beads on it.
Dedication: I dedicate this
vessel to Ms. Rallison.
About the Author
My name is Brandy. I like playing on
the monkey bars. It is cool when I do a cherry bomb. But I just learned
how. I like my friends. They are: Shanine, Des, Michelle, Krystyne,
Chynesse and Danny. |

Michelle's Vessel
Vessel
I made a vessel. First, you make a ball. You cut it in half and you have a
vessel. But is not a vessel yet. You fire it and you paint it. You put the
three legs on the bottom and you put beads on it. I dedicate this vessel
to Ms. Rallison. |

Shanine's Vessel
Vessels
My name is Shanine. Guess how I
made this vessel. I just got clay, I put it in a ball then I cut it in
half and I scooped out the bottom and the top. Then I made a whole again.
Then I designed it. Then it got fired and after that we painted it. And I
designed it more. I would like to dedicate this vessel to my art teacher
Ms. Rallison. What goes inside? Well I was thinking that you can put
jewelry or secrets in it.
My vessel's name is Destiny. What
if it was alive, I'd be very scared! When
I sleep it can wake me up in the morning. |

Leslie's Vessel

If it was alive: It can protect me from bullies.
What it eats: Pizza, fruits and ice cream.
Dedication: To Mr. Proctor, my teacher.
What goes inside: Treasures, notes, jewels and pictures. |

Deserine's Vessel
1# The first thing I did was use clay.
I turned it into a bal. I made it into an egg shape and designed it.
2# I cut it and scraped the clay out of the insides.
3# Then I decorated with beads. |

Chynesse's Vessel
Vessels
I dedicate this to Ms Rallison.
My vessel is made out of clay. First, we made a ball. Then everybody
looked at a poster. The poster had pictures of vessels. Ms. Rallison cut
my ball in 1/2. Then we dug it out on both sides. We did some designs on
it. Then Ms. Rallison put it in the kiln. Then we decorated the vessels.
Now it looks pretty. |
