September 2007

Welcome back Luxton students, families and staff. We hope that you enjoyed a restful and fun-filled summer.  We are looking forward to an exciting and educational school year!  The staff of Luxton School have been extremely busy preparing. The floors are gleaming and the classrooms are shining and ready.  Our new computers should be arriving any day.  As well, we look forward to growing our Family Centre.

A warm welcome to our new families and staff.  You are not alone.  There will be many new faces on the first day of school and there is room for all!  September is a time of beginnings in school and we will work together to make  each person at Luxton School feel comfortable and part of the team. New staff members include: Mrs. Fernandes in Reading Recovery, Ms. Roziere to p.m. Nursery, Mrs. Bell will join us in the Office and Library, and also new in the office – the principal - Ms. Trautmann.  There are a number of educational assistants who are assigned to substitute positions.  Once their positions are confirmed we will update our staff list for you.  Joining our team, will be eight student teachers from  University of Winnipeg and  University of Manitoba.

The school priorities this year are:

1. To enhance and promote literacy and numeracy.

2. To develop initiatives in the area of assessment for learning.

3. To learn more about sustainable development and to implement our learning.

Teaching and learning Mathematics will be emphasized  especially in grades 4, 5 and 6.  The early years teachers have already participated in the Early Years Math Project and now the focus moves to middle years.   Our teachers are looking forward to working together in the Middle Years Math Project. They will use what they learn in the classrooms and our students will certainly benefit.    As the year progresses, remember to ask your child  if he or she

has tried a new activity in Math.

We will also be learning more about our environment and as we learn, there will be opportunities for students to help the school and community be more careful with our planet.  Think green!

Want to become more involved? Thinking of volunteering?                                       Our Volunteer Orientation will be held on Tuesday, September 11 at 10:30 a.m. in the Family Centre, Room 66. If you volunteer but have never registered with the Winnipeg School Division, please attend the meeting.

Our “Meet the Staff Evening” is Thursday, September 20, 2007 at 6:30 p.m. This is an informal evening that is a good opportunity to get to know your child’s teacher.  There will be a short assembly with introductions.   You will have an opportunity to visit your child’s classroom and receive a course overview for the year.  Ask your child to introduce you to his or her teacher.  The staff look forward to meeting you, too!

I am honoured to be principal of this fine school.  I have received a really warm welcome from the staff and families I have had the pleasure of meeting.  Thank You.  I look forward to getting to know all of you.  When you are in the school, please help me out by introducing yourself.  As the new “kid” on the block, I’ll be easy to spot.

Respectfully,

Ms. Trautmann
