Dissecting Owl Pellets
Home Up Programs About Lord Nelson Student Work Parent Information

Owls, like most birds swallow their food whole. Since birds do not have any teeth they cannot chew their food. Therefore, they use their strong and sharp beaks to rip their prey apart and swallow the chunks whole. The owl slowly digests it's meal by separating the softer materials (such as meat) from the harder materials (such as bone). It then regurgitates the harder material along with the indigestible items (fur, feathers, beaks, claws) in the form of a pellet.
