Description
Grade three students from two Winnipeg School Division Schools (Montrose and Weston)
participated in a data gathering activity involving the use of video conferencing
interviews. The data collected was used to create spreadsheets and graphs. The
video conference was also used as a prelude to e-mail communication between the two
schools.

This unit involves several separate components - each an entity in and of
itself. The components, in order of occurrence, are: gathering personal information
about oneself , the actual video conference, gathering information about another student,
organizing information that is gathered, creating spreadsheets/charts, and utilizing
e-mail.
Before the actual video conference, students used the interview question sheets to record
information about themselves so that they would be prepared to answer the student who was
interviewing them. During the video conference, interview answers were recorded for
later use.
After all the video conferences were complete, the data sheets were attached to wall of
the computer lab at each school. Pairs of students were then assigned to tally data
regarding a particular interview question. The student pairs then sat at a computer
workstation to, under direct instruction, prepare a simple spreadsheet incorporating the
tallied data. The spreadsheet was then used to generate a bar graph. Two
dimensional bar graphs were chosen because the students were familiar with them.
Time permitted student pairs to create another type of chart - of their own choosing.
Subsequent to this, students from one school (Weston) used a hard copy (paper) e-mail
template to compose a short e-mail message to a grade three student at the other school
(Montrose). Upon reception of their e-mail messages, a reply was made.
