The purpose of this activity is to introduce children to
area. To estimate the area of a shape and then to test their hypothesis and find the
actual answer.
Create a file like the one below. Ask students to study the sizes of the larger and the
smaller box and to estimate how many of the smaller boxes would fit into the bigger box.
Ask them to write down their estimate using the labeling tool and then to use the scissor
tool to cut around the smaller box and to use copy and paste to create more boxes to drag
into the big box until it has been filled. Does their estimate and the actual number
match?
Extensions:
Shapes can be altered to make the estimating more or less difficult. You could have
the students estimate several times using different sized units. Area can be expressed in
various units.
