Paint - Addition - Base 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 (No Code)

Description
These five mathematics addition activities reinforce the process of "exchanging" blocks for those of higher value.  Bases 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 are included.  These activities may be utilized as a bridging activity from concrete to abstract.

These activities are contained in five Paint files. For use on a school local area network,these files should be installed is a shared, read only directory on the server (WSD#1 uses S:\2Student).  If you wish to download any of these files, click on these links:
BASE2.BMP, BASE3.BMP, BASE 4.BMP, BASE5.BMP and/or BASE10.BMP

After launching Paint and opening the file, children can be directed to solve addition   (orsubtraction) equations in whatever number base the blocks indicate.  A base ten example,17 + 9 will be shared here:

Using the TEXT tool, create the digits to represent 17 and 9.
Use a pick tool to drag the digits into the place value chart on the right side of the screen.
PICK the plus sign COPY it.
PASTE and DRAG the plus sign into each of the two small circles.
CAPTURE the “long” with a PICK tool.
COPY and PASTE the “long” into the large space to the left of the place value chart.
COPY and PASTE seven “units” into the large space to the left of the place value chart so that the number 17 is represented.
Create the number representation for the numeral, 9.
Use the “Trade Centre” as a destination to drag 10 unit pieces.
CAPTURE, COPY and PASTE another long into the large space to omplete the exchange.
Drag the two longs and six units into the “sum” space at the bottom of the screen.
Use the TEXT tool to record the sum in the sum space of the place value chart.
A completed example is included.
