Details:

This lesson is taught when students have been studying fractions in the classroom using hands on materials. The files Half.bmp, Thirds.bmp, Quarter.bmp are stored on the server in a 2Student/Read Only/Shared Directory.

Students open up the Windows Paint Program and load the file Half.bmp.  Students are shown how to use the cutting tool and the Edit Copy/Edit Paste commands to make duplicate copies of the fraction pieces.
Students decide how many of the fraction pieces will be needed to cover the whole piece at the top of the screen.  Students are instructed not to move the original piece but a copy of the piece.

After the whole piece has been covered with the appropriate number of fraction pieces they copy and paste the fraction piece "number" like 1/2  onto each of the fraction pieces.

The completed activity could be printed out with the students name or a teacher could have a recording sheet to check off the students' names as each of the activities halves, thirds, and quarters are completed.

With older students they could use the whole.bmp file and make up their own pieces.

To download the above files, click on these links Half.bmp, Thirds.bmp, Quarter.bmp, Whole.bmp.
