This lesson was created using a Paint (Paintbrush) program and has been titled "equfract.bmp". For use on a network, this file should be installed on a shared, read-only directory on the server, such as Drive S:\2Student\. If you wish to download this file, click on this link equfract.bmp.
After launching Paint and opening the file, students are required to find at least one equivalent fraction for another given fraction. To do this, students can visually use the colored, labelled strips. Students can also use one of the select tools to frame the strip for which they are searching an equivalent, then drag this strip onto the other strips until they find a match. If students choose to do this, they must be taught to use the edit/undo button to ensure the strip is returned to the proper place. They must do this before they click on any other feature.
Example: A student is looking for an equivalent fraction for 2/3. S/he uses the box select tool to frame 2 parts of the 3/3 strip. S/he can then drag those 2/3 down to the sixths strip and discover that 2/3 is equivalent to 4/6. S/he then clicks on edit/undo, and the 2/3 strip is returned to its "home". The student then selects the text button and fills in 4/6 on the line "2/3 = ___".
